Les Apaches

LES APACHES (2008)

Contemporary modernist feminist Les Apaches resurrects in the name of retribution. She rises in the name of those women who suffered at the reckless hands of male les apaches dancers, their necks broken in the 1930’s craze to perform the violent dance in the underground bars of Paris.

The dance supposedly derived from a fracas between a pimp and a prostitute, incorporates influences of the tango and waltz. As acrobatic rhythmic shapes form, bodies slam upon the floor and silver trays fly, voyeur empathy projects from one partner to another in a bizarre battle of the alpha male and femme fatale.  This performance ran from 2008-2010 as Rollo her sully homunculous and hand-made puppet accomplice, was brutally smashed to smithereens for the final time at Surreal House, Barbican, 2010.
